Anaesthetic Preparations;

Anaesthetic creams and gels include Emla, Ametop and Denela. There are also similar precautions to be considered with Xylocaine Spray.

Over the Counter anaesthetic gel is licensed as a local anaesthetic to numb the skin when needles are used to take blood samples and to relieve the pain of cannulae insertion (for example when using an intravenous drip).

It must not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women or babies and epileptics must take special care. It must not be applied to wounds or broken skin, on the lips, mouth or tongue, eyes or ears or on anal or genital areas.
When used correctly, Ametop gel is safe however there are important safety considerations in it’s use.

In adults and children over 5 years, no more than 5 tubes may be used at any one time over different sites. One tube will cover an area the size of an average palm (for children under 5 years, consult the leaflet).

Applications may be repeated after 5 hours to a maximum use of 7 tubes in 24 hours. Do not use more than 20 sprays of Xylocaine spray.

The gel application must be covered for about 30-45 minutes, you can use plastic food wrap if no dressings were given to you. The dressing and gel must be removed after this time and must never be left on the skin for longer than 1 hour. The numbness will last about 4-6 hours.

If you use more gel than you should or swallow the gel you may experience tingling and numbness in the tongue, ringing in the ears, feeling and being sick. You may also twitch and fit. If you experience any of these symptoms you must contact your doctor immediately. Other side effects are less severe such as redness of the skin, itching and localised swelling. Blistering of the skin is more severe and you must contact your doctor.

Special note about Ametop. Ametop is a refrigerated line until dispatch when the chill chain stops. It must be used within one month of dispatch. If you will not use the product within this timescale please change your order to Emla or Denela which do not require refrigeration
